More than 150 years ago, Bucknell students were ready to lay down their lives for a cause that would reshape the destiny of a nation. Now, two current students are working to visually preserve this legacy.

Cat Jamison (‘24) and Libby Nieporte (‘24) are nearing the end of a 3-year-long project; a documentary honoring the forgotten heroes of Lewisburg and greater Union County during America’s Civil War. The Film, tentatively titled “Civil War at Lewisburg,” is slated for online and local-access television release towards the end of this academic year.

The history of Bucknell’s involvement in the Civil War is compelling for students and community members alike. “Civil War at Lewisburg” sheds light on the students who picked up arms at Gettysburg, the nurses who trained on campus, and the president’s surprising role in the underground railroad.

This documentary is entirely written, filmed, and edited by Jamison and Nieporte. The pair orchestrated interviews with experts and collected historical perspectives unique to our Union County’s role in the Civil War.

“The research aspect of this was the hardest part,” remarked Jamison when asked about the documentary process. “We had to look hard for the individual stories of our community members.”

What they have found, though, should be a part of every Bucknell student’s identity, and is worth a watch when “Civil War at Lewisburg” debuts later this year.
